The Leaving Cert in 6 Sentences

Irish society is obsessed with third level education.

Therefore:  The sole (well almost!) purpose of the Leaving Cert is to be an entrance exam for Third Level.

Therefore: The Leaving Cert is a high-stakes exam and assessment must be fair, consistent and transparent.

Therefore: ‘Teaching to the test’ is an understandable and morally justifiable response to a fair, consistent and transparent examination.

Therefore: Alternatives to a Leaving-Cert-type exam (such as continuous assessment) are well-nigh impossible to implement while maintaining fairness, consistency and transparency.

Therefore: Meaningful change is possible only if we reduce our obsession with Third Level.
